Asian Handicap Explained: Level, Half and Quarter Lines
A Head Start, Measured in Goals
Asian handicap gives one team a start of goals — or a fraction of a goal — before kick-off, so that the draw stops being a result you can lose to. It is the most popular football market in this part of the world, and once the line types are clear, every outcome can be worked out before you stake.
The line is written against the favourite as a minus figure and against the underdog as the same figure with a plus: home −0.5 is the same line as away +0.5, seen from the other side. Add the handicap to your team’s score and settle on the adjusted result.

Take the plus side and every cell turns over: +0.5 wins on a draw as well as a win, and +1 hands the stake back on a one-goal defeat.
Quarter Lines Split the Stake
A quarter line such as −0.25 or −0.75 is two bets in one. Half the stake goes on each of the lines either side of it — −0.25 is half on level ball and half on −0.5 — and each half settles on its own. That is where “half won” and “half lost” come from: one half is settled while the other is returned.
RM100 on −0.75 at 0.90, and your team wins 1–0: the RM50 on −0.5 wins RM45, and the RM50 on −1 comes back untouched. You receive RM145 for your RM100 — a profit of RM45.
Why Players Choose It
- Two outcomes instead of three. Taking the draw away makes most lines close to fifty-fifty.
- Prices near even money. Both sides are usually priced close to evens, which suits steady staking.
- Cover on tight games. Level ball and the quarter lines return all or part of a stake when a match is close.
What the Result Is Based On
Football handicaps are normally settled on the score at the end of regular time, stoppage time included, but not extra time or penalties. What does −0.5 mean in Asian handicap?
Your team has to win the match. Take half a goal off its score and a draw becomes a defeat, so there is no refund at −0.5.
What happens to my bet on a quarter line?
It splits: half the stake goes on each neighbouring line. −0.25 is half on level ball and half on −0.5, so a draw returns one half and loses the other.
Does Asian handicap include extra time?
Normally not. Football handicaps usually settle on the regular-time score including stoppage time; check the market rules for knockout games.
